Why does Google only index one page?

A few weeks a launched a site (with a new rootdomain) and I was happy to see that Google indexed the main page of the site only a week later. Time has passed and Google still seems to only notice the index page. Because the keywords in the site are not very competetive the site should turn up higher in the search results. I wonder if the problem is that that Google has just indexed one page of the site? I have read that the size of the sites are also an importan criteria for the Google ranking system. So therefore site who only gets worse results.

I have added a sitemap as suggested in many threads. However I have seen that some sites have links from the actual index page to the sitemap.xml document. Does that make the sitemap more effective? I thought it would be enough to just put the sitemap in the root directory.

On the other hand the site I am talking about is very simple with six different pages, so I cant imagine that the Google crawlers would have any trouble getting through the site... - with or without a sitemap.

Bottom line: why has Google only indexed one page, and is there something I can do about - except for just wait and see?
