Hi
I'm trying to get information on discussion forums.bulletin boards etc. I've come across the remotely hosted ones but am thinking that a site based one would be better.
Can anyone advise me where I can go to get information on the different types. Not reviews of types but background technical info. eg. if I Download a program to run myself - do I need a database system behind it? If so what type? Where can I go to start investigating this topic.
thanks, in anticipation, for any help.
badger33I don't know of any site that has the info you want all in one place.
I think <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.ikonboard.com">http://www.ikonboard.com</a><!-- m --> is one of the best free threaded message boards available. It is very similar to this forum.
Its coded in PERL and requires about 10megs of space to function, doesn't use a mySQL DB like this forum does, but its free.
Do a search with your favorite search engine for "message boards", "bulletin boards", "chat forums" and so forth.
What you can use will depend on the features of your server, PERL/CGI is allowed on most all servers, PHP and ASP are becoming widely available. You might have to pay a little extra with some hosts for mySQL capabilities and some do not offer it at all. Check what you can use on your server before going on a hunt for a good BB. If the server side is not an issue then a forum such as this one ( <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.vbulletin.com">http://www.vbulletin.com</a><!-- m --> ), PHP/mySQL DB, is good (not free, but not expensive). But even a free BB like ikonboard, PERL/textbased DB, is still very good and will meet the needs of most websites.
Here is a link with a long list of PERL based BBs/forums....
