Using PHP to for dynamic pdf creation, template based?

I've seen quite a few options out there for creating pdf's on the fly with php. I'm just looking for some general insights on what is the best method to use.<br />
<br />
Basically I'm looking to take a pdf on my server as the template, modify it by adding some dynamic text, save the pdf as a new file and then be able to download the modified copy.<br />
<br />
This is in a shared server environment so I don't have total freedom to install mods so a more universal solution would be what I'm looking for.<br />

Well,I have done that in Java
with help of itext which is again open source

Its quite easy to that..it has all of your pdf solutions.

Sorry have no idea for php but as far as i know itext .net can be used for .net programmers.
