Please help explain managed hosting and accessing it

I know in managed hosting you don't get the access to the root; does that mean i can't use ftp for my site? Some managed hosting provide shell access, but what commands do i use to upload and edit the files and folders of my site. Thank youIt really depends on the type of plan you go with. Most hosts will not give you root access on a virtual/shared account for security reasons. Most will give you root to your account on VPS plans or dedicated plans.

Managed hosting typically means they are there to help you with whatever you need in regards to support for your account... which makes me wonder why you aren't able to ask them these questions. ;)

You should be able to use FTP with any paid hosting plan. As for shell and what commands to use, that would depend on the OS you are on and what exactly you are trying to do. If you bought a "managed" plan from someone you should be able to contact them through their support system 24/7 to ask questions like this.

Good Luck.i haven't bought the hosting account yet, but i liked one i found on the web. they said there is no root access but i have shell access. But how do i upload and edit in shell? before i buy itYou don't need/want SSH access to *upload or edit* files to your server. I believe you'll have FTP access anyway, and that's the way to do it better. :)

Regards,You do not need shell access to upload your files. You can just use any FTP software like WS_FTP Pro or any FTP software out there to upload your files. There are bunch of free good ones out there.I know in managed hosting you don't get the access to the root;

Says who?
Rackspace (the supposed LEADER in managed hosting) doesn't deny root access.
Fastservers does
Liquidweb (supposedly managed, haven't really tested that) does not

It all depends on the provider you go with here. If your provider says no root access then find one that allows it. Denying root access to "managed" servers is just silly. it's like buying a car, but the dealership refusing to give you the key to get under the hood.

does that mean i can't use ftp for my site?
Not at all. Even if you don't have root access, you can STILL use ftp for your site. You should never be running any sites (websites) as root anyways, that's just a big big no-no.

Honestly, don't used "managed server providers". Instead, go the alternative route and use a server MANAGER or management company. The difference?

Managed server providers can not fully manage 1000s of servers for their clients. Full management means updating software, checking logs, making sure that each server is running safely. It just can NOT be done by a DC. No way.

Server MANAGEMENT companies, on the other hand should have no problem doing this, keeping an eye on their client's servers, keeping them up to date (though many don't). They develop software to keep things up to date, and stay up to date with things as much as possible.

The ONLY thing that a management "company" can't do in this case is touch your server, which is something the DC is responsible for anyways. Whether or not you have a "management" plan with the DC, they must keep their own hardware up to date and effective.Here's a good definition of what I consider a true "fully managed" server.
