Fresh content and SERP performance

It is a commonly touted thing that search engines like updated websites with fresh content and it helps improve the SERP performance.

Now here is the question - what rates as fresh content?
For many website it is not feasible (nor in fact desirable) to keep adding new pages (the web is full of outdated stuff).

So other than creating new pages, what qualifies in the SE algorithms. If I go in and fix a few typos then upload the file, does that count?

How about rewording a sentance or to, or writing just a new sentance on a page to improve the clarity of something - does this rate??

Or how about near identical versions of the site - with perhaps the order of conent moved around and these are uploaded on a rotating basis - does this count as new content each time the version changes?
