Buying a Domain Name?

I'm looking into buying a domain name for myself, but I've never done it before and need to be guided through the process. I don't need hosting, because it will be a very small website, and I'll be hosting it myself.<br />
<br />
I've been looking on network solutions. When I click on advance I get hit with all these options.<br />
<br />
1. Pubilc v. Private Registration<br />
2. Get e-mail for your domain registration<br />
3. Submit site to major search engines<br />
<br />
What is Public v. Private Registration?<br />
<br />
Isn't the e-mail handled on the server?<br />
<br />
If I want people to be able to find my site on Google, should I submit my site to major search engines?<br />
<br />
Also, does anyone know of a good, cheap, ad-free web hosting service that supports ASP.Net and FTP accounts? I probably won't need much bandwidth. SQL Server support would be nice too.<br />

You can register a domain name from lots of places on the internet. Just google register domain name. Usually it costs around 10 dollars per year to have a domain name. If you go to my source link they have a whole guide on how to build and promote a website including how to get a domian name.

Public = publicly findable ie not a secret

hosted just means you have a way to put it on net

email can be a function of the site server or not

You can submit your site yourself you do not need to pay for site submission.

Depending on the kind of website you want http//www.Christianwehost.com is a good place and they will answer questions.and there is no extra charge for them to register your domain name for you.

BTW technically buying a domain name means getting one from someone who already has it registered. Sounds like you want to create your own which is less expensive.

Hello,

You could compare ASP.NET Hosts and check their prices in this site http//www.hostingaspnet.net/Top_ASP_NET_Shared_Hosting_Providers.aspx

If you are going to register a domain then the best way to register a domain for free is to purchase your domain and webhosting together. In this way it is possible to get your domain for free. Some webhosting companies offer this as a gift . I am using bluehost webhosting for mine

I wouldn't go with Network Solutions if I were you. Within the domain name industry, there've been confirmed reports on their unethical business ethics.

Anyway, back to your question. I'd instead refer you to Moniker ( http//affiliates.moniker.com/pub/Affiliates?affiliate_id=2253&landingpage=domaincheck&domain= ) . It is much cheaper and reliable than Networks Solution and you get the privacy service for free.
