adding unread posts to welcome screen

I am a newb, so sorry if this is too simple.

How do I add this line to the header??

Image does not display, so anyways, A forum I belong to has the following lines in the upper right hand corner of the header,

Welcome, registered user
10 unread posts since your last visit
you last visited on....

How do I add the "Unread posts" line?????
