Most may ask "well why haven't your developers told you what configuration to get." Well the answer is, they gave me a brief description of my needs (will include a little later) and little else. I am not a technical person so I am pretty clueless, but since I am among experts I really would like to get as many professional opinions as possible. The requirements, as given by the developers are the following

A little about the site. It will have large number of videos and photos and user accounts etc... So, with that said, what is everyone's recommendation. Do I need a managed host, or will a virtual private server suffice, and why one over the other? I noticed on the configuration for Liquid web they ask a number of questions so I will lay them out below. All of that looks good you should ask Liquidweb if they support tomcat first before ordering a server.
"Ajax , javascript to be supported" is client side and has nothing to do with the server.
"Video play" what?
As for the disk space even though you only need 5gb you will get around 80gb hd unless you are looking to get a VPS. Do you know what the application will be doing ? If it's some form of website how much traffic?
It would ultimately depend on the application, how much it's used before anyone can give you reasonable recommendations for processors/memory.Our application is a social networking site. But very small to begin with. It will have photos and videos etc...similar to myspace, zoodango and all those other ones but with a different focus. Not sure if this helps!As a side note, if you do decide to go with LiquidWeb, check their specials page (Here) (<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="https://www.liquidweb.com/cart/content/dedicated/Specials/">https://www.liquidweb.com/cart/content/ ... /Specials/</a><!-- m -->) since you may be able to get more RAM and bandwidth at a discounted price.Other than that, you should call them. Their sales department should be able to answer your questions directly.I was with liquidweb for a month but due to some unforeseen reasons, i had to migrate to another server company. But I must say that their techs are "extremely" well versed in all aspects of server mgt and config. And they usually responded to me in less than 30mins. Let us know your experience with them. Maybe post a 2 months reviews after you been with them that long. Should be consistent with my experience. By the way, you need to check the bandwidth allocated vs your true requirements, what with all the videos and stuff. You also need to look into the TOS to see what charges might be applicable if you exceed the monthly bandwidth.
