Getting visitors

I designed myslef, but had it build for me. Now I am working on it myself. I joined the forum to get more knowledge, as my webdesign knowledge is pretty much 0. I hired a promotion company to promote the site for, they wotk trough seo, the results have been pretty bad so far, does anyone have similar expirinces with these kind of companies. Since my expiriences were bad, I decided to do the promtion myslef, by creating click through pages with nonsene text on them such as <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://flamesgirlshotbabesanime.blogspot.com/http://www.webspawner.com/users/frederik4/index.html">http://flamesgirlshotbabesanime.blogspo ... index.html</a><!-- m --> (http://) my hope is that people will find these pages and click trough to my site. So far no results in google. So does any one have advice on how to get your rankings up? Does pay per click work, or is that just a waste of money? And does it get customers or people that just visit the site? I used word tracker to find out what keyword are good to use, I used these words in my click trough page, but can you also use other words, as words might generate traffic, but they have little to do with my site. As we all know that content is the first impression for all the viewers to make a look into it, so i suggest that try to make some modifications in your content by adding some more interesting as well as some useful concepts which surely helps in getting more visitors to your sites, which automatically helps in boosting up your keyword rankings in most of the search engines.
