How VBulletin knows if someone is using a nulled script?

even though, I shell out over a thousand bucks a year for hosting, even if 180 isn't that much in comparison, it just doesn't feel right given that I spend thousands of hours developing for open source while these people take an open source technology and use and make people pay for it. It just doesn't feel right at all.

If I used a nulled version of VB, Then after say 6 months I want to buy a license; Would I need to start all over again? Eg. Install a new forum, add my skins and forum sections etc, get my members to re-register, etc etc?

I emailed VBulletin directly and asked

They said I wouldn't need to reinstall it or lose anything from my current forum.
